LIFE V-aiR project
What is the LIFE V-aiR project?
LIFE V-aiR is an innovative European project launched in August 2022 for a duration of 4 years. Its objective is to raise awareness and provide training on critical issues related to air, climate, and energy through two virtual reality tools:
- A serious game, designed for decisionmakers to help them develop and implement ambitious policies tailored to their territories.
- An escape game, created for the general public, to promote changes in individual behaviors that improve air quality.
With a total budget of €1.3 million, 60% funded by the LIFE program of the European Union and co-funded by the Grand Est region, the City of La Rochelle, and the project’s partner organizations, the initiative is being deployed across 8 European territories.
Step into the future where virtual reality reshapes how we perceive air, climate, and energy. With LIFE V-aiR, this innovation becomes reality!
Progress and updates
Virtual Reality Games
- Serious game:
The game is now fully playable after operational testing. It contains 5 modules, corresponding to the sectors responsible for air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Minor adjustments (bug fixes and user experience improvements) are currently underway, with the official release scheduled for early 2025. It is available on the Meta Horizon store.
- Escape game:
A first room is already available and has been tested by the public. This piece provides a quick understanding of the effects of 4 major pollutants on health and the environment. The design of additional rooms is progressing, with a full release planned for mid-2025.
Deployment
LIFE V-aiR aims to reach 1 400 policymakers and 12 000 citizens by the end of 2026 across the pilot territories: Málaga (Spain), Braşov (Romania), and six French regions: Grand Est, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Normandie and Martinique.
Initial deployment actions have already begun in some regions:
In Martinique, the serious game has been integrated into training sessions for municipal and community officials. Additionally, the first room of the escape game was played by over 100 participants during the 2024 Science Festival.
In Grand Est, the serious game has been presented at events attended by decision-makers. Training sessions have also been specially organized for the Strasbourg Eurométropole. The same applies to the escape game, which will soon be offered in the region’s high schools.
In Hauts-de-France, the game has been deployed for various events including the Fabulous Factory in Dunkerque in September, where over 100 people were engaged and educated, as well as with different local authorities for the serious game.
In Normandie, the agents of Le Havre metropolitan area had the opportunity to experience the serious game and the escape game. In 2025, several other local authorities will be made aware of these initiatives.
These initiatives help test and adapt the tools to the specific needs of each territory.
A sustainable approach
The project embraces a sustainable approach through the Green Agreement, which commits partners to reducing the environmental impact of project activities.
Key Focus Areas:
- Digital activities: Eco-design of the games and moderate use of digital tools.
- Printing and communication: Limiting print materials and using recycled paper.
- Catering: Prioritizing vegetarian, local, and plastic-free meals.
- Travel: Choosing low-carbon transportation and eco-friendly accommodations.
The Sustainability Committee oversees these commitments and promotes exemplary practices throughout the project.
